First day of the ‘Miss and Mister Riichi Tournament’ in Paris. Left, organizer Anthony Ea.

PARIS - Richi mahjong has two new champions. Today, in Paris, the first ‘Miss Riichi’ and ‘Mister Riichi’ were honoured after the tournament of the same name. The title of ‘Mister Riichi’ went to the male player with the most wins during the tournament: Zeyu Sun, who also was the winner of the tournament itself; the title of ‘Miss Riichi’ was for the female with the most wins, Nicole Haasbroek from the Netherlands.

The new titles were an invention of ‘Mister Miaou Miaou’, a.k.a. Anthony Ea of the Magic Mahjong Social Pung Club. Twenty-five players from France and three from the Netherlands had gathered in de Club Adèle in Paris to try and win the prizes.

There were some remarkable extra trophies. The Magic Hand went to the player with the most tsumos (self-picks). That prize was for ‘Mister Miaou Miaou’ himself. Finally, there was an award ‘Yakuza Hand’, for accumulative yaku, where even a yakuman limit hand could get additional points for honitsu (half-flush) or Dragon pon. Antoine Rossard won that one.

The tournament in the Club Adèle was a losely organized, not too serious and cosy event, with good food and a good atmosphere. Quite some passers-by in the Blanches street, not far from the famous Moulin Rouge Nightclub, stopped to have a peek through the windows and sometimes even to make pictures of this gathering of Asians and Europeans, playing a weird game.

Top-three players, from left Chaolei Chen, Zeyu Sun and Annie Manzo.
