Koji Idota and his crew at 'Kyoto MCR Mahjong Club' hosted their third "京都桜杯" ("Kyoto Cherry Blossom Cup") which, like the previous editions, attracted players from all over Japan, China and Singapore. Since riichi mahjong has been the dominant style in Japan for the last seventy years it is not hard to imagine MCR is still in its infancy. The slow but steady increase in the number of participants with every edition of this tournament (2016: thirty-six, 2017: forty, 2018: forty-four) shows the Japanese are taking their time to warm up to the MCR rule set. Idota explains: "When MCR was established in China in 1998 some Japanese players participated in the first competition in Beijing, China. After that, the Japan players introduced the rules to the Japanese people." [...] "Only about 500 people are playing MCR mahjong in Japan. About 20 MCR clubs exist in Japan. Our club, Kyoto MCR Mahjong Club also is one of them. So, almost MCR players are belonging to several clubs at the same time."

Idota, who gained world wide fame winning the third "Open European Mahjong Championship" in Baden ("OEMC2009"), posted footage on his personal blog showing the match in the final session between Osamu Kumagai, Kimito Kugimiya, Koichi Miyake, and Yasuhiro Kitaura.
