Special Report by Matthieu Pfeiffer

The 2016 edition of the “Tournoi International de Paris” took place in the city hall of the 9th district of Paris, in the very fancy Council Room. One hundred players from Europe (Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, and Russia) competed during seven sessions. This MERS2 tournament was as well counting as the French championship of this year, welcoming quite a number of players from La Réunion that came to compete for the title. Nevertheless the defending champion - André Balagourou - could not be present.

After the first day, Florent Descamps was ahead of the tournament with 14 table points (662 minipoints), followed closely by Danilo Serio equally with 14 table points and a little less minipoints (556) and Cyrille Rak in 3rd position with 13 table points.

During the second day, the competition has been really fierce during each sessions. Danilo took the lead after the fifith session with 18 points ahead of Cyrille 17, while Florent only scored two table points to reach 16 points.

At the end of the following session, Cyrille took the top position (21 points) while Danilo scored a modest 1 point to reach 19. At this time, Marianne Croeze that performed a modest 10pts during the first day, reached the podium by winning two tables in a row and hence 18 points. The suspense was still intact as the following player Hector Escaso had 17,5 and the next three had each 17 points, thus still leaving a possibility to get on the podium.

Finally, the last round was decisive and resulted in an international podium, as Danilo and Marianne both won their tables while Cyrille scored 1 points and ended up 3rd, but still getting the title of French champion.

During the last session, Aziz Azougagh scored a tremendous amount of 648 points (!!), hence totaling the highest amount of minipoints of the tournament (1055).

On the team side, the competition has also been very tight, as the three top teams had were only separated by half a point, SPA-in The Nine Gates (38,5 TP / 826) already being on top, followed by Knitted Dragons (38 TP / 1204), My Mahjong Self Picked (38 TP / 1038) and “WTF la team qui sert à rien” (37 TP / 442). During the second day, the Knitted Dragons dropped and the other top teams remained in the same order, with score gaps a little larger. SPA-in The Nine Gates (Spanish / German team) won the team competition (69,5 TP / 1832), My Mahjong Self Picked came in second  (66 TP / 1630) and “WTF la team qui sert à rien” (62,5 TP / 1204) just behind.

This tournament included a reward for the most original team name, that went to the team “What the Flush !”.

No less than 100 participants competed, from nine countries.
