| 'Welcome to mahjong friends' on the WMC 2007 in Chengdu. |
UTRECHT, February 17th - Chances are great that the next World Mahjong Championship will take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The board of the Nederlandse Mahjong Bond (Dutch Mahjong Union) has sent a letter to the European Mahjong Association in which it expresses its interest in organizing this event. The general assembly of the Dutch union today has approved with this proposal of the Dutch board.
The previous world championship mahjong took place in Chendu, China, last year; five years after the World Championship in Mahjong (Tokyo 2002). On this occasion, the location of the next location was discussed. EMA vice-president Martin Rep proposed that EMA should investigate whether any European country might be interested in taking up this challenge.
That the Dutch are eager to organize the next WMC, is not surprising. Of all the European countries, they have the largest experience in organizing international events. The first Open European Mahjong Championship (Nijmegen, 2005) was considered a huge success. Also, the upcoming European Championship Riichi Mahjong is a Dutch initiative. Yet, the WMC is an incredible challenge and it will be hard to equal the 2007 Chengdu event, which took place in a splendid location and, thanks to sponsors, could be played with sophisticated equipment, e.g. modern mahjong shuffle machines.
As a venue, the city of Utrecht is mentioned. Utrecht is famous for its Jaarbeurs (annual fair) and has lots of hotels.
