Mahjong as a world pastime.

Tai-Up Kim
Perhaps you thought that there is only one worldwide organization (the China based WMO) and that there was only one mahjong standard for international mahjong tournaments (Mahjong Competition Rules).

You are so wrong.

You have never met Mr. Tai-Up Kim from South-Korea, the indefatigable president of the World Mahjong Federation and, since 1998, CEO and president of Tanksoft, Inc., a software company which, amongst others, developed an 'undefeatable' online mahjong game called Mahking. In 1999, he founded the World Mahjong Players Association. Recently, this organisation was upgraded to the World Mahjong Federation (WMF). Also, Tanksoft concluded an agreement with Playtech, a gaming company, listed in the London Stock Exchange, which got him some financial stability.

And finally, under his 'nom de plume' Kingstone Kim, the other day Tai-Up Kim published an English book about the rules of the World Mahjong Federation, in addition to his earlier book World Mahjong, which was written in Korean (and hard to buy outside South-Korea). He hopes that his book will play a role in the 'renaissance of mahjong' and establishing mahjong as a world pastime'.

Tai-Up Kim does believe in mahjong very much, but he does not believe in the Mahjong Competition Rules, even though these rules will be applied on the first World Mahjong Championship (November 2007 in China) and on the European championship (next month in Denmark). He considers them 'a freak' , 'even though the beginners (most of European mahjong players) may accept it for granted, they will soon recognize in the same when their level of understanding mahjong enhances.' Tai-Up Kim is looking for partners in organizing mahjong tournaments in Europe and the United States.
