MOSCOW, December 1st - For the first time in history, a Russian mahjong tournament has been held. In Moscow, the newly born Russian Mahjong Federation organized the Moscow Open Championship (Mahjong Competition Rules).
It was a modest start, with sixteen players, but these players came from far-away places as St. Petersburg and Astrakhan. Subscription to the tournament was opened one month earlier, and in that time some 30 applicants subscribed, but they had to cancel their subscriptions for various reasons. Organizer Mark Chizhenok, who recently also played in the World Championship in Chengdu, was quite satisfied about the interest for the tournament.
Of course, there were some problems for this first event. Not all players were quite familiar with the Mahjong Competition Rules, and toward the conclusion of the tournament temperatures in the playing room dropped below what could be called comfortabel. Also, the lighting in the room was not great. But Mark Chizhenok hopes that, in time, the Russian players will improve their skill so they can compete on the level of European tournaments.
The winner of the first Open Moscow competition was Vladimir Stepanov from Moscow (16 table points, 435 scored points); runner-up was Anna Stepanova (11 - 424), third prize was for Kovalev Natalia (11 - 179).
