HILVERSUM, January 24th, 2007 - Dutch author Mr. Jelte Rep looks quite happy when he show the first copy of his book, which he just received from his US editor. He leafes through it and says: 'Look, it is just as beautiful as the Dutch version.'
After years of hard labor, the English version of 'Het Grote Mahjong Boek' is now published. In Holland, it was the publishing house Tirion which brought it on the market. It was a modest best seller, and it drew the attention of the American publisher Tuttle.
Various mahjong players (e.g. the riichi mahjong experts Sjef Strik and Martin Rep) helped him with the translation in English. The final text was reviewed by the Japanese/American mahjong player Ryan Morris.
The Great Mahjong Book is entertaing reading stuff about the history of mahjong, but contains also tons of information about all kinds of rules. The beautiful layout, by Danish mahjong player Kirsten Bjorneboe, was copied for the US version.
