Logo WCM 2010UTRECHT - Near is my shirt, but nearer is my skin: just as was the case on the OEMC 2005, the organizing Dutch take the most seats (28) of all European countries on the forthcoming World Mahjong Championship, which is to take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, August 2010. The European Mahjong Association (EMA) has accepted a proposal of the Nederlandse Mahjong Bond (Dutch Mahjong Association) about the quotas on the WMC. The organizers, however, do not owe their prominent position because they are first in line. It is due to their massive presence in the EMA ranking list.

Theoretically, China or Japan may acquire larger quota than the Netherlands. For Asia, 60 seats are available. These will have to be divided by China, Japan and Chinese Taipei. Since, in the past, China never sent many players to European mahjong events, the Japanese may eventually outnumber the Dutch.

Other European countries with large quotas are France (15), Denmark (12), Italy (11) and Hungary (10), but these are considerably lower than the quota of the Netherlands. The distribution code has yet to be accepted by the World Mahjong Organization, but EMA and Dutch Mahjong Organizers are 'certain that they will support the proposal'.

A number of seats for the championships will be given away by the internet mahjong server MahjongTime, sponsor of the WMC 2010. Also, the best five players on next year's European Championship are quaified automatically.

The organizing continent gets the majority of the seats. So, 130 seats will be reserved for Europe. According to EMA, this will be the standard for future World Championships. Asia gets 60 seats. The 'Rest of the World' (which basically is only the USA) gets 20 seats.

The European quotas per country:

    * Austria: 8
    * Belgium: 3
    * Bosnia: 1
    * Denmark: 12
    * Finland: 2
    * France: 15
    * Germany: 7
    * Holland: 28
    * Hungary: 10
    * Italy: 11
    * Portugal: 3
    * Russia: 2
    * Slovakia: 3
    * Spain: 2
    * Sweden: 3
    * Switzerland:3
    * United Kingdom: 3
    * Rest of Europe: 4
