HANOVER - Denmark has a new mahjong champion! Last year, in Copenhagen, Martin Wedel Jacobsen was crowned as the European Champion Mahjong Competition Rules. Just one year later, another Dane won a European title, which means that Denmark really can be called Mahjong Country Number 1 of Europe. Danish player Thomas Kragh is the great winner of the first European Riichi Mahjong Championship. Mr. Kragh ruled during the whole tournament. His endscore was 196.900. Mr. Benjamin Boas from the USA was the runner-up (147.300 pts), third place was for Mrs. Ping Song from China. The prize for the best MahjongTime player was for Chris Scheffler ('Dragontwo') from the Netherlands. In the final classification, he ended on the 8th position.This first international riichi championship was organized by Riichi Mahjong the Netherlands (i.e. Mr. Sjef Strik and Mr. Martin Rep), in cooperation with the German Mahjong League DMJL, particularly the active Hanover mahjong club. Eighty players from eleven countries participated in the succesfull event. In his opening speech, Martin Rep remembered Mr. Frans Roquas from the Netherlands, who recently passed away. Frans was the great inspirator of riichi mahjong in the Netherlands.
