Logo of the WCM 2010UTRECHT - The board of the Dutch Mahjong and the European Mahjong Association have made quotes per country for the forthcoming World Mahjong Championship, to be held in the Netherlands, August 27~29, 2010. In total, 220 players can participate. The summary you will find here.

Here is the text of the accepted proposal.

OEMC 2009:

We reserve seats for the Top 5 of the OEMC 2009. These seats are not transferable to another player.

Mahjongtime:

Mahjongtime wants to organize qualifiers, where an 'all in' arrangement can be won. We know that there is scepticism on the way things are going in their game, but officially there is no reason to disqualify them. As a sponsor, they should get the opportunity to 'cash in' on the WMC, so we have allotted them 5 seats.

Continents:

The organizing continent gets the majority of the seats. We reserve 130 seats for Europe (this will be the standard for future World Championships too).

Asia, i.e. Japan, China and Chinese Taipei, gets 60 seats.

The 'Rest of the World' (which basically is only the USA) gets 20 seats. If any Asian country would want more, those will first be taken out of this quota, as it's not likely going to be used.

Europe

For Europe: Every EMA-member country gets 2 seats. This adds up to 24 seats (Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden).

The original seven EMA members (Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Holand) get 2 extra seats each - 14 seats. This will be the last time the 'old countries' get this priority.

We reserve 2 seats each for Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland and the United Kingdom - total 8 seats. Belgium may be our 13th member soon, but that is not final yet and for Portugal, Switzerland and the UK, some additional seats are welcome because there are more players than there are on the ranking.

We reserve 4 seats for a possible 'Rest of Europe'.

The organizing country gets 10 additional seats. This is going to be a standard for next championships too (also OEMC), but it depends on the total number of seats available.

(Subtotal 60 seats)

Based on EMA ranking:

Top 10 of EMA (MERS) ranking on December 31, 2009 will receive personal (non-transferable) invitations.

(Note: only players who have participated in at least 5 tournaments will qualify for this invitation. So, someone with 4 participations and 1 zero result - to add up to 5 to get on the ranking - does not qualify).

Based on the number of players in the EMA ranking Top 100 as per December 31, 2008 additional seats are calculated for each country. If we apply the 'no less than 5 criteria', this leaves 85 players, but in the end it does not make a substantial difference.

With a base of 60 seats to be divided, this means 60 additional seat(s), i.e.:

    * Austria 4,
    * Belgium 1,
    * Bosnia 1,
    * Denmark 8,
    * France 11,
    * Germany 3,
    * Hungary 6,
    * Italy 7,
    * Holland 14,
    * Portugal 1,
    * Switzerland 1,
    * Slovakia 1,
    * Sweden 1 and
    * UK 1

additional seat(s), for a total of 60.

Summarizing the seats for Europe based on the 'fixed quota' and the current ranking:

    * Austria: 2 + 2 + 4 = 8
    * Belgium: 2 + 1 = 3
    * Bosnia: 1
    * Denmark: 2 + 2 + 8 = 12
    * Finland: 2
    * France: 2 + 2 + 11 = 15
    * Germany: 2 + 2 + 3 = 7
    * Holland: 2 + 2 + 10 + 14 = 28
    * Hungary: 2 + 2 + 6 = 10
    * Italy: 2 + 2 + 7 = 11
    * Portugal: 2 + 1 = 3
    * Russia: 2
    * Slovakia: 2 + 1 = 3
    * Spain: 2
    * Sweden: 2 + 1 = 3
    * Switzerland: 2 + 1 = 3
    * United Kingdom: 2 + 1 = 3
    * Rest of Europe: 4
