Leader of the Dutch ranking wins largest riichi mahjong tournament

Frans Roquas TrophyNIJMEGEN - It was not the first tournament she won, and it probably will not be the last either. Ms. Désirée Heemskerk, current leader on the Dutch (general) mahjong ranking list and winner of the respectable 10th place during the World Mahjong Championship 2007 in Chengdu, China, today in Nijmegen won the Cherry Blossom Tournament 2009.

After the European Riichi Mahjong Championship (Hanover, 2008), riichi mahjong (a.k.a. Japanese Modern or Japanese Dora), is becoming more and more popular. New tournaments were organized (in Feldkirchen and Vienna, both Austria) or being organized (German Riichi Championship 2009, a.k.a. the Phenix Tournament, coming May in Hanover), while the existing tournaments are happy to subscribe more players. In the Netherlands, both the Kinryu Majan Taikai (September 2008, Almere) as today's Cherry Blossom Tournament broke records, with respectivily 48 and 56 players.
These are still modest figures compared with the number of players in the European MCR tournaments. But Martin Rep, co-organizer of the Cherry Blossom Tournament, is quite optimistic. "There is a small, but very fanatic riichi mahjong society in Europe, with a number of outstanding players. One can see that the level on each riichi mahjong tournament is still increasing. So I think the future of riichi mahjong in Europe looks bright. The rules are both thrilling as very well balanced. Do not forget, riichi mahjong is the largest mahjong variant in the world with widely acknowledged international rules."
