VIENNA - 'Like was to be expected', Ms. Bo Lang from Switzerland is the European mahjong player with the best results in MCR-tournaments over the past year. Alexander Doppelhofer from Austria has made up his long-awaited list of the best results of 2008. Bo ended as the runner-up in the European championship 2009, right after winner Koji Idota from Japan.

Another player from the honorary stage at Baden, Luca Gavelli from Italy, ended on the third position of Mr. Doppelhofer's list. Perhaps more surprising is the number two player: Angéla Nyulasiné Lakos from Hungary.

The list 'The best players of the year' is an initiative by Austrian player Alexander Doppelhofer. He started this new tradition last year, with 'the best players of 2008' . Just like on the  EMA MCR-ranking, only players who have played in at least two tournaments, are implied. Non-European players in the OEMC 2009 are not listed.

In the column 'Total 2009'  the points of a player are displayed and then divided by the number of official MERS tournaments. Then the results are compared with those of 2008.

Alexander also made small listings of the fasters 'risers', the 'deepest fallers' and the best new players on the list.

Mr. Doppelhofer is working on a list of the best riichi mahjong players of 2009. This new ranking can be expected later this week.

Best Players of 2009

WOW! Is that for real? Whether it's official or unofficial, I am pleasantly surprised. Contrary to what Martin said, I did not expect to be the Best MCR player for 2009. After all, I have not been active in tournaments last year like I used to and I am very much aware that there are a lot of very good players in this game probably more deserving than I am. I guess, being European Champ gave me an edge. At any rate, I am just as thrilled being #4 on the EMA Ranking List.
