Dutch player Sjef Strik is one of the players who will compete in the Third Open European Mahjong Championship, this week in Austria. Today, he reports on-the-spot at Baden: where are the Chinese? And where are our playing schedules? I just had my first Austrian Sauerkraut and this must conclude my first day at Baden, a nice little health resort near Vienna, It’s been a hard day’s night… I arrived at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport around five a.m. - we are talking about Wednesday, July 1st - and I was glad to meet some other Dutch participants to the OEMC who had booked the same flight. At nine a.m. we landed at Schwechat Airport, close to Vienna, and while the others traveled straight to Baden, I first had to do some shopping in Vienna since I hoped to find some cd’s of my favorite pop group Rush. Anyway - I was in time at Baden to report at Hotel Schloß Weikersdorf, where the registration would take place, and where I could meet the other players. So I met some of my mahjong friends from all over the world. Apart from the Dutch, I shook hands with Benjamin Boas from America and his Japanese friend Takunori Kajimoto; I spoke with the Danish riichi champion Thomas Kragh, with Kimoto Kugimiya from Japan, etcetera. And, for the first time, I could cast a quick look at the rewards for the OEMC and I must confess: I am really impressed. Especially the prize for the best team is beautiful; it’s a wooden sculpture with the OEMC 2009 logo on it. The coming days, I will take some pictures. See if I can mail them to MahjongNews.Com. Yes - and then there is the problem of the no-shows. Uwe Martens, not only the president of the European Mahjong Association but also the head referee of the championship, cannot come due to health problems. This weekend, during the General Assemblee of the EMA, he will resign as the president. But the most remarkable event is that world champion Li Li and ten other Chinese players are not coming. Nobody knows exactly what’s going on. Personally, I think it is just too bad. I would have loved to play against Li Li.
Players Party As a result of this, we do not have the schedule yet for the coming days. Tonight, I was at the Players Party in Heuriger Streitenhof, where we would get them. But the organizing committee still has problems. They have to switch from a 160 to a 152 players schedule. Since the Chinese cancelled their registrations at the very last moment - they had not paid the 180 euro fee yet -, the organizers were not able to call up substitutes. John Kuijpers, one of the Dutch players, told me that they asked his wife Els if she, possibly, would be willing to participate… |
