Only 17 days to go before the start of the third European Mahjong Championship MCR! But in the meantime I have some practising to do.
From January this year I have started to play two or three times every month with Conny and Chris Scheffler (also known as Dragonone and Dragontwo on MahjongTime.com) and with Martin Rep. Next Tuesday we play again and in the last week before the tournament we play our last match.
I know the MCR game very well but I know for myself that I have to play a lot to get more experienced; what is the best hand to go out with, not forget to count the points of all hands you have when you win, do you pung a certain tile (to pung or not to pung, that’s the question…..)
Yesterday Conny and Chris organised for the fourth time in a row their Mahjong Garden Tournament. When you want to play Mahjong outside, you have to be lucky with the weather. Yesterday we were, we had a nice temperature of 22 degrees! We started at 10.30 hours in the morning and at 21.12 hours in the evening we ended this lovely tournament. We have played with three tables 5 sessions of 90 minutes.
I’ve ended at seventh place with nine table points: three times third place, one time second place and I won only one table. That was the third session where I beat Martin with only three points! In the fourth session I was leading, but in the last game Martin won the table, I finished as second. In the last session a had a chance to end up in the top three, but Betsie Daanen had some beautiful hands with self drawn. One of the hands she had was Upper Four combined with Mixed Shifted Pungs and single wait, while I had a pung Green Dragon on the table and two Red and two White Dragons in my hand. When I took Bamboe 8 of the wall, I had to defend, although I had a waiting hand to win with Little Three Dragons! My decision was good, because when I broke down my hand to discard a Character tile instead of Bamboe 8, she took this tile herself. Although I lost that table and even the second place, I had a good feeling about how I played this game.
It was great to play and practice in a nice, small and friendly tournament just two weeks before the championship. Thanks again Conny and Chris for
organising this lovely tournament!
I will keep you informed the next coming weeks before the tournament.
This is part 2 of Sjef Strik's diary about the OEMC 2009.

By the way... Than you so much for this update...
