NIJMEGEN - As from today, we have a new poll online: how about MahjongTime? Is it really the best server to play online, or could it be much better?

Everyone can fill in the poll - please do so!

I don't agree that it's the best place to play online but that's because I have access to Japanese sites. That being said, this poll is going to attract a lot of trolls...

I discovered MahjongTime in 2003 and have never looked back. We in the European Scene owe Everything we are to MahjongTime, if not for them we would never have people all over the world playing Mah-jongg! I have seen my own skills develop in RCR as I analyze my tactics and strategies playing with the excellent and helpful community, and I like the software's unique oriental designs. I believe with their help I can Reach better than anyone in Japan. Benjamin If you don't like or can't afford it, just go play somewhere else! :

A lot of people don't seem to realize that MahjongTime has many features which no other servers currently offer. For example, a majority of games are "QuickMahjong" which is VERY helpful to beginners like myself because it limits games to a single hand. This prevents expert players, who know how to make many high-value hands, from stomping us in every single game. Instead, it becomes an exciting race to see who can make the first hand, any hand, with no regard for the difficult scoring system. Another thing is you can set a fast discard timer so no single person can slow down the game by being slow. Instead, much of the waiting time seems to be spent between discards, waiting for the server to give the next player their tile. This gives beginners like me lots and lots of thinking time between turns. I once played a full East round (4 hands!) and it took about an hour and a half, which is fairly decent for a friendly game of Mahjong!

Sorry, not just trolls. Also MJT employees, apparently.

That's hilarious, thanks for a good laugh.

A lot of the results so far indicate that people play on other servers rather than MJT. Can some of those let me know the URLs for these alternatives.
Many thanks

MJT is more a community than a gambling site. There is some banter in the chatroom and mostly a friendly atmosphere where people chat and get up to date with each other while playing mahjong. Much like playing mahjong IRL in Europe. That the site is 'clunky' or a bit slow is like having a wobbly table. After a coulple of years now, people start to get annoyed to a point they start to rebel.
Other sites, I've seen Kong88.com, emahjong.net, tenhou.net, are more focussed on playing mahjong for cash. Especially the latter is much faster and with a lot of players on it. But all Japanese and no time to have a drink or roll a cigarette. For practise I choose tenhou, for fun I choose MJT, for a regular tournament (every day) I choose e-mahjong. If you want real clunky, then go and see kong88.
None has to die, let the players choose (and have a choice). By lack of players some of the sites might die, but that is their business.

Here are two statements:
- Tenhou can make you cash.
- Tenhou can be played for free and has over 600 000 registered IDs, and 352911 active users.

The first is obviously false.
The second is not only true, but can be reinforced that aside from maintenance, there is always 1500 people on the server, and 7000+ now around midnight (Japan time).

http://tenhou.net/man/ UPDATED 2009/11/14 07:40 / アクティブプレーヤ数:352911 (55-60% into the page, right near the bottom has the dates the ID number hits something. Projected 700000 by Christmas.)
http://tenhou.net/stat/access.html - Straightforward, no Japanese knowledge required.

Sure, MahjongTime can live on, and you can play a zillion rule variants, but remember where the love is. It's directly proportional to the number of users, this is the gold standard.

I don't play on MahjongTime, I mostly play on Tenhou in lieu of a good Anglophone client; my main point, dear fellow, was that MahjongTime's very existence holds back the possibility of a better Anglophone client.

its tenhou for me i`m afraid, mjt is just to slow for me i seem to spend most of the time waiting for players to be seated than actually playing the game. tenhou`s auto seating means i`m playing as soon as i`ve login in.
