KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan - A university student who posted on the Internet his prank call to a cable news network's disaster relief telethon set up to take calls for disaster reports and rescue requests, has apologized and promised to make amends by making a donation and volunteering, local news reported yesterday. The prankster surnamed Lin was hunted down in cyberspace and identified by outraged Web users after he posted to his blog site a self-recorded video while calling the TV station, continued the report. After Lin was correctly identified as a student of National Kaohsiung University of Applied Science, Lin reappeared in his blog in another video and said that he was sorry for causing a public disturbance and asked for forgiveness for his grave mistake, said the report. He also pledged to make a NT$10,000 donation (just over 300 USD) to rescue and recovery efforts, as well as promised to volunteer after he returns to school in fall. A local media reported that the apology was the result of pressure exerted by the school. Lin had called TVBS' televised disaster relief hotline, established for the public to provide typhoon-related disaster updates or to request rescue and aid, at 1 a.m. on August 8, after losing a game of mahjong to his friend, added the report. During the call he asked the news anchor how come there was so much wind in the south but yet he could not get the “wind” he wanted, referring to a hand in mahjong. (China Post) |
