HONG KONG - The mahjong partner of an 88-year-old woman has been arrested after the elderly woman's body was found, a media report said Friday.

The suspect, wearing a hood and chains, was led by police to a flat in the Kwai Chung district as police reconstructed the crime, the South China Morning Post reported.

The unnamed woman was also taken to a goldsmith's shop where police earlier recovered five gold ornaments worth 10,000 Hong Kong dollars (1,280 US dollars) that were stolen from the dead woman's home.

The deceased, named by police as Lee Wai-lan, was discovered unconscious in bed by her niece and was later declared dead by paramedics. A postmortem found she had been suffocated.

Police identified her mahjong partner as a suspect after watching closed circuit television footage of the dead woman's building and interviewing her friends.

The woman, who was arrested on Wednesday, had reportedly visited the deceased about 90 minutes before the victim was found by her niece.

She subsequently disappeared but was caught after she went to her parents' home and police discovered Lee's mobile phone there.
