SHANGHAI - Five masked gangsters who robbed 13 people of more than 70,000 yuan (US$11,000; €8,500) in a mahjong room in Jinshan District have been arrested on charges of robbery, city prosecutors said yesterday. Six offenders, aged 17 to 25, allegedly covered their faces with black masks and broke into the mahjong room in Weilong Residential Community around the midnight of July 29.

HONG KONG - Racing legend Brian Kan Ping-chee today was found guilty of offering a HK$130,000 (€12,580, USD 16,670) election bribe to a village representative. The former champion trainer, 73, left 130 HK$1,000 banknotes in the shop of Sheung Shui village representative Liu Fu-sau as an inducement for Liu to vote for him in a Heung Yee Kuk ballot in March.

SINGAPORE - A barber who fled Singapore 28 years ago after fatally slashing a stall assistant has been jailed seven years. In 1983, then 29-year-old Lee Hong Mun slashed a stall assistant over a mahjong debt owed to an acquaintance.

PRATO (Toscany) Italy - Four Chinese have been arrested by local police because of gambling with mahjong. They could easily be trapped since, because of the heat, they had left the windows of their apartment open.

PALMA, Spain - An illegal gambling ring in a bar in Palma has been dismantled. Mostly Chinese citizens would meet to play poker and mahjong with money stakes, according to the National Police. During the police inspection, 18 people were implicated with €6,470 which was in play at the time of the raid.
