MOSCOW - Miss Sandra van de Berkt from the Netherlands would have loved to play in the Russian championship in Moscow last weekend. She even flew to Moscow, but she failed to reach the venue. Her Moscow trip turned out in a nightmare. Sandra had agreed with Mahjong News to write a report about the tournament, since she was the only Dutch player who had subscribed to the championship. But, as she tells Mahjong News: “I had booked a hotel over the internet and even paid for it, but it did not exist! At the given address, I only found private apartments.“It was quite difficult to get back to the airport in this country, where there is almost no one who speaks English and where the local mafia controls the taxis. Once I was back at the airport, I was lucky to get a room in the Airport Hotel – for 200 euro’s a night. The bad news was that the hotel was more than a one hours drive from Moscow. "Next, it took me three days to get acquainted with the subway in Moscow, with all its corridors and connections. And all is written in Cyrillic, which looks a bit like Greek. I never could, however, find the venue of the mahjong event. All in all, this whole adventure cost me a lot of money, and I strongly doubt if I will succeed in getting the money back which I paid for the hotel. For me, no more mahjong in Moscow When in Moscow, Sandra tried to reach Mark Chizhenok, president of Mahjong Russia and organizer of the tournament, but she did not succeed, due to the limitations of her mobile phone.
