COPENHAGEN - Dutch player Harry Kal was amongst those who participated in the Open Danish riichi mahjong championship 2009 and also, the next day, in the Riichi Seminar which was organized by Mahjong Denmark. At the request of MahjongNews.Com, he wrote down his impressions of the seminar, which was conducted by Tina Christensen, president of Mahjong DK, and Morten Andersen, the new Danish riichi champion and a referee at the first European Riichi Mahjong Championship 2008.

(Updated with latest news: also the Dutch, organizers of the next World Championship, abandon MahjongTime)  SAN DIEGO - The European Mahjong Association yesterday has cancelled the cooperation with the internet server MahjongTime. This happened after MJT cancelled the German Open Online Championship just two days before this was to take place. Also the German and the Dutch mahjong associations yesterday ended the cooperation with MJT. EMA-president Robert Rijnders supposes MahjongTime may be broke. |

MALAYSIA - Six visually handicapped participants created history at the Mines Mensa Scrabble Challenge 2009 that took place recently at the Mines Shopping Fair in Malaysia. For the very first time, visually handicapped people had taken up the challenge and competed alongside their sighted counterparts in the mainstream tournament. According to the Malaysian Society for the Blind (SBM), blind people are also able to play mahjong.
