HANOVER - Day 1 of the European Championship was the day of Gemma Collinge from the UK, of Joel Ratsimandresy from France and of Sjef Strik from Holland. Gemma topped the ranking after the hanchan (rounds) 1 and 2. After three rounds, Joel Ratsimandresy took over, and then it was Sjef Strik from the Netherlands who got to the number one position after hanchan 4 and 5.

The EC Riichi 2010 - Day 1
HANOVER, Germany - After two rounds I think this may become Gemma Collinge’s day again. The Cornish ‘ReachMahjongDotCom Babe’ has won her first two tables, and she has taken the lead with a considerable number of points before her major opponent, Sjef Strik. Whom, until now, she has never been able to beat. Same place, one year earlier, Gemma was even more smiles and beaming like never before, when she won the First German Riichi Open, here in the Hanover Jazz Club. So,who knows?

In July, for the second time, the European Riichi Mahjong Championship will take place in Hanover, Germany. And, just like the first time, the skilled Japanese players are the great favorites for the open European title. Although some of the top players think they may be able to beat them. So, a Dane might be the next champion again, or maybe even a Dutch with his notorious ‘Pong Way’.

NEW YORK - A riichi mahjong club in New York - that is just about as rare as a piste de petanque in Tokyo, or a skating rink in the Sahara desert. Not that Americans don’t play mahjong - the National Mah-Jongg League is the largest of its kind in the world, with over 300,000 members. But - that’s mah, and mah, according to many mahjong players, is a far cry from the real game.
So it’s quite remarkable if there appears to be a riichi mahjong group in New York, which will send a player to the European Riichi Mahjong Championship, coming summer in Hanover, Germany. |
