Here's the answer to the Sherlock Holmes Mahjong Mystery 'the Gentlemen's Draw'. Question: Please, reconstruct deal flow and explain what has happened provided following assumptions: • player(s) made as minimum as possible of declarations (calls)? • the wall contains as maximum of tiles, • Rules were MCR and draw has been recorded. Answer: Although the players were solid gentlemen, they played mahjong only for the second time in their lifes. So, 13*3+14=53 tiles are dealt, the wall contains 144-53=91 tile, deal has been started. East moves first. He declares “Hu!” Everybody wowed, although it turned out to be false hu. So, East discards a tile which… was taken by South who declares another “Hu!” which turned out to be false one. Same story has happened with West and North. After only four declaration during the very first round we have: • wall still contains 91 tiles, • none of the four players can declare “hu” anymore, So, East offers the other gentlemen to accept a draw. |
