I was the managing referee for EC Riichi 2010 and was personally responsible for most of the decisions Ian addresses here. I think that Ian raises some very important points and even though I do not agree with all of his conclusions I certainly appreciate his sentiments. It is tough to strike a balance between enforcement and encouragement and I welcome discussion on the subject. Furthermore, and I would like to be very clear on this, I absolutely agree that the draconian environment of many MCR tournaments is something that should be done away with--not just for Riichi but MCR as well. However, I do not think that any of the above calls were overly harsh. I am planning a series of columns on reachmahjong.com that address these and other issues more in detail. The first such column has already been written (and predates Ian's column) and will hopefully be published soon.
