| By "pattern-building" mahjong I mean a game in which you win with a regular hand, and then the hand is evaluated (for its beauty and difficulty) and then you receive a reward based on the evaluation. In MCR, you cannot win with the vast majority of regular hands; the goal of the game is to complete a winning hand, which is more defined by the 8-point minimum than by the regular hand. Thus, MCR is quite far away from pattern-building mahjong.
