The new riichi mahjong strategy column by Takunori Kajimoto. Current wind: South Wind. Current number 1: you. Should you make riichi, or will a smaller hand do? Let's look at the following hand. Is it wise to go for a riichi hand, or is it better to try to win with a smaller number of points?
ReplyThe strategy of this case depends on the amount of points between you, as the current number 1, and the second player. For example, suppose you have the above hand in turn 9 of the South, 3rd round; you are West and you have the highest number of points. Your hand is ready for Tanyao, Pinfu, and one Dora. If the difference in points between you and number 2 (North) is 8,000, you should not declare riichi. Because if you go out, you have a margin that North cannot pass you with drawing Man-gan in the next game (South, 4th round). Whether or not to riichi, depends on your margin that your opponent cannot pass you with drawing Man-gan. In this situation, if your margin is 3,000 pts. against North, you have to make riichi. Because you cannot get a safety margin when you go out this hand without riichi. QuestionThen, should you make the following hand riichi or not? Consider both options (you have a full margin or not), and answer!
Correct answer
Your margin is small: Discard

Is it all luck then? Certainly not.
The two major things that aren't random are the choice if you take the previous discard and meld and which tile to discard.
In Riichi it's also important to decide if you are still try to make MJ or that you are playing defensively trying to avoid somebody else MJ.
It's these area's where the better player has the edge over a lesser player (in the long run), or do you only see lucky and unlucky players around you?
