AMSTERDAM - Today, a new MahjongNews poll is launched: are there too many international mahjong championships? It looks as though every tournament nowadays is a qualification tournament. People are still qualifying for the WMC 2010 in the Netherlands, and in the meantime they have to subscribe for the European Championship Riichi Mahjong, next year in Germany. Preparations are already being made for the next European Championship in Italy, 2011. And then, one year later, another World Championship is likely to take place. Some players think that this is too many. They say mahjong tournaments are not fun anymore, since one always has to qualify for some international championship. Other players just can't get enough of it. Each new tournament is a new challenge. They think it is great to meet players from other coutries, and to compete with them at the mahjong table. On the occasion of the 100th MERS tournament, directors Bram van Erkel and Jelte Rep have granted permission to publish online the movies they made on the occasion of the first MERS tournament, the OEMC2005 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
Mr. Van Erkel and Mr. Rep made a documentary about the competition, which now can be watched on YouTube.
