NANTOU (Taiwan) - A township chief in Nantou County defended herself against accusations of dereliction of duty. Hsu Hsiang-ling, chief of Shueili Township, was accused of playing mahjong on August 8, when typhoon Morakot dumped heavy rains throughout Taiwan and triggered a mudslide, which wiped out more than twenty buildings in her township later that night. Hsu justified her work performance by saying that she left the emergency operation center at midnight for inspections in several villages in the township. She claimed that she fell asleep on her car after the inspections. One of the victims complained that Hsu ignored her phone call for help, for which Hsu explained that she had directed the person to call the local fire department because the villager couldn't clearly identify her location. On Thursday evening, the chief further explained that she did drop by her friends' house when they were playing mahjong, but she only stayed for a short while. Several government officials have been bashed for delays and dereliction of duty in relief efforts for the aftermath. The Cabinet has promised a reshuffle in September. (China Post) |
