Empress ElisabethBADEN (Vienna) - Until now, the ‘Mahjong Super July’ is not becoming exactly the success the European Mahjong Association had hoped for. Only the European championship, the OEMC 2009, will see many (160) participants. It looks as though the other three tournaments will have considerably less subscribers than they had during the past years.

In the wake of the OEMC, three other mahjong tournaments are being organized in Central Europe:
  • the Open Hungarian (July 11~12),
  • the Open Austrian (July 18~19), and
  • the Open Austrian Riichi Tournament.

The Open Austrian and the Open Hungarian together are, since 2007, called the ‘Sisi Cup’. Coming month, the third edition of this combined competition will take place. The numbers of subscribers during the past two years:

Tournament Year # Players
Austrian Open
2007
60
Hungarian Open
2007
76
Austrian Open
2008
80
Hungarian Open
2008
72

But, until today, in Dunaújváros (Hungary), there are 56 subscribers, whilst in Gurk (Austria) there are considerably less players: just 28. And the organizers of the riichi tournament in Vienna (July 26) even doubted for  long time if the event could take place, since the number of subscribers was pretty low. Perhaps, a ‘mahjong vacation’ in Austria/Hungary was not such a great idea after all, given the cost of the OEMC 2009 (subscription costs €180), combined with the credit crisis.

For all national 'Super July' tournaments, subscription is still open.
