Logo of the Austrian resort BadenBADEN (Vienna, Austria) - The Third Open European Mahjong Championship 2009, which will take place at Baden near Vienna in Austria, July 1~5, will consist of nine rounds.
During the sessions 1~8, the players will circulate according to a scheme which is determined by drawing lots. But, during the last session, the places of the players will be determined according to their position in the ranking after eight sessions. So, the players 1~4 of the general ranking will meet each other at table 1, the players 5~8 at table 2, etcetera.
This can be read in the tenth and last OEMC 2009 Newsletter, which has been sent to the participants to the event. In the championship, 160 players from eighteen countries will participate.
A team of five referees is appointed, led by main referee Uwe Martens, president of the European Mahjong Association and the German Mahjong League.
The other referees are:
  • Tina Christensen (Denmark), vice-president of the EMA and president of Mahjong Denmark
  • Margareta Stollwitzer (Austria)
  • Mark Chizhenok, president of Mahjong Russia (he takes the place of French referee Stéphan Parcollet, who has withdrawn himself from his mahjong activities)
  • Norbert Zsámboki (Hungary)
There is an extensive program both for the players as for their accompanying persons. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 5th, 19.30~20.45 p.m. The next day a demonstration match will take place in which Li Li from China, the current world champion, will participate and, hopefully, also the new European Champion.
