TemseTEMSE (Belgium) - The Belgian mahjong tournament 'Three Little Dragons' has been split in two parts. The first part is an official MERS-tournament (2 MERS points) and will take place on Saturday's,May 9th. The next day, Sunday, May 10th, the 'Three Little Dragons' part II will take place. This is a friendship tournament, the winner of which will have the right to call himself Champion of Belgium.

Organizer Michel van Damme explains: "On Sunday's, a lot of novices will be playing. For them, it would be too stressful an event if they had to play against dyed-in-the-wool foreigners, the kind you can expect on MERS tournaments.

"Besides, for the Dutch players, the Three Little Dragons Tournament is a qualification tournament for the World Mahjong Championship 2010."

The formula seems inspired by the Dutch Golden Dragon Tournament, where the real event on Saturday's was followed by a friendschip tournament on Sunday's. In Temse, however, there still is a national title at stake. Which only can be won by Belgian players.

It is the first time that the Open Belgian Mahjong Championship will be held at Temse. Until recently, this competition was held at Mechelen. But organizers Jan and Linda Thomassetti have pulled out the plug. In 2007, the couple took a 'mahjong sabatical' and last year they did not apply for a MERS qualification since they wanted to determine themselves who could subscribe to the tournament and who could not.
